To learn about using a body pillow for comfort and alignment during sleep, I spoke with Dr. Karen Litzy, a physical therapist and spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association, and Marianne Ryan, a physical therapist and author who helped us test pillows for Wirecutter’s pregnancy pillow guide, which I wrote. For that guide, in addition to specialized pregnancy pillows, we researched and tested standard body pillows, which many women find comfortable for sleep during pregnancy. This guide builds on that research and testing, and adds picks for those who may need a body pillow for another reason—such as an injury—as well as picks for side- and stomach-sleepers who don’t need specialized support. Side-sleepers may find it comfortable to hug a body pillow, reducing pressure on the bottom shoulder and arm. It can also be comfortable to tuck the pillow between the knees, preventing the pelvis from tilting forward or backward: “If you sleep on your side without a pillow between your legs, the muscle fibers can get overstretched,” Ryan told us. This not only causes stress on the backbone, but can also cause muscles to overwork in their attempt to keep the spine in correct alignment, causing muscle fatigue and cramping. If you usually sleep on your back then you might notice that your neck and back are sore in the mornings. This may be because you do not have the proper support for your whole spine. It is recommended that you have a pillow supporting your head that allows for your neck to be in a position that is not craned too far forward or too far back. Contoured pillows are the easiest to find to meet this criteria. It is also recommended that you have some support under your knees to encourage the proper curves in your spine. Conversely, if you generally sleep on your stomach then it is recommended that you have little to no pillow under your head. Sleeping on your front can cause your spine to settle uncomfortably and a pillow under your stomach may help you sleep more comfortably in this position. You can shift and press the shredded memory foam fill to customize the support better than in other pillows. The slightly lumpy cut-up foam fill can feel odd at first, but we know from testing shredded memory foam bed pillows that most sleepers tend to get used to the texture. Though it’s firmer and heavier than the Company Store pillow, the Snuggle-Pedic is still one of the most flexible pillows we tested, easily bending into different positions. It comes with a removable, zippered cover, and, after you buy, the company will send you an additional one for free. It also offers a generous 20-year warranty. A pregnant woman who rolls onto her back in her sleep will normally wake up within minutes… because it’s uncomfortable and her baby kicks her to wake her up. A pregnancy pillow that goes around you is unlikely to prevent this from happening (depending on how thick and firm it is). The Mumanu® pregnancy pillow doesn’t need to support you behind your back because it keeps you comfortably aligned and helps you stay in one place longer. If you do wake up on your back, just roll onto your side again. Having a pillow behind you will make you even hotter and also prevents your partner from cuddling up behind you (or having any space to sleep!).
